IBS & Diarrhea

Diarrhea is not a normal bowel movement. The cause of diarrhea escapes many sufferers. They constantly are trying to determine why they have diarrhea. Some people with diarrhea may have only one bowel movement a day while others have diarrhea 10-15 times each day. Their quality of life may be declining because of the diarrhea as they must know every bathroom between their home and destination to avoid accidents.

The cause of diarrhea may be as simple as a lack of beneficial bacteria in the gastrointestinal system and the diarrhea may stop by taking a probiotic supplement (consisting of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium) from the health food store. Diarrhea may also be caused by an abnormal population of bad bacteria, yeast or parasites in the gut.

An additional cause of diarrhea may be because of something you are eating. Diarrhea occurs most frequently from the use of dairy products. Fructose containing foods such as fruit, corn, high fructose corn syrup, added sugars and beets, carrots, onions, peas, tomatoes, eggplant, sweet potato and winter squash may also cause diarrhea.

Intolerances to gluten containing foods such as wheat, oats, barley and rye may also cause diarrhea. Celiac Disease (different than a gluten intolerance) is also well known as a cause of diarrhea.

The simple way to test a dairy, fructose, gluten intolerance or Celiac Disease is to stop eating those foods.
